Now there is that classic saying that money can't buy happiness and I agree with it. However, money can buy foil gear and there's nothing that makes me happier than foiling!

That said, as most of you have already learned - learning to foil is HARD! It's by far the most frustrating thing I have ever tried to learn, however, it's also that much more gratifying once you overcome those early hurdles.

If I could go back in time there is one specific thing I would tell myself before starting - INVEST in e-foil lessons or buy a foil drive.

The magic with the foil drive is the versatility. It's both a tool and a coach in one device. It evolves as you progress and never becomes irrelevent. Recently I've come to love it even more as I've been able to put big smiles on my friends and family as I get them flying for their very first time.

In fact, as I write this my hair is still wet from getting my friend Nils (pictured below) up on foil for his very first time. For a true beginner, it's amazing that you can set up a big 125L wing foil board with the foil-drive in e-foil mode (mounted at the bottom of the mast) on a day when there is no swell and nothing to do.

The whole setup took me less than 5 minutes to put together and within an hour, Nils was walking back to the beach with a huge smile on his face stoked to experience foil flight for his first time. A few minutes later after swapping batteries my wife was out in the water hooting and hollering after her first few moments of flight. Overall, it was a great afternoon for true beginners to build some foil muscle memory so their next session trying to prone foil or wing foil will be that much easier (and safer!).

Looking at the picture above, it's hard to believe that the same device was assisting me into head high unbroken waves a weak ago on my 4'2 34L prone board. When I use it for prone foiling, I'm able to mount the motor about 8 inches below the board vs all the way at the bottom of the mast. Two different boards, two different foils - same foil drive. This thing really works with anything!

The beauty of this is that the foil drive basically acts as my personal jet ski, getting me into unbroken waves that are impossible to paddle into - and then after rising on my foil the motor is in the air, finger off the trigger, and I'm experience pure prone foiling with zero drag - something you could never do on a normal e-foil. And better yet - this thing costs 1/4 of the average e-foil. Incredible!

When I bought my foildrive, I was already able to go down the line on my own, however, I couldn't turn without getting launched off my board. In my first few foildrive sessions, I was able to focus on 1 or 2 specific skills, improving at a much faster pace. I'd spend 2 hours just doing figure eights of backside turns into frontside turns - over and over again. I could go out on a day with no waves and build muscle memory that would normally take weeks or months. The very next time I went out in real waves without the foildrive was night and day from the previous session - it honestly felt like magic. I could finally turn up and down the wave with confidence - frontside and backside.

So long story short - if you value your time and want to progress as fast as possible, I can't recommend a foildrive or similar product enough. It's a total game changer that will maximize your time on foil, regardless of the swell or wind conditions. On long roadtrips far from the ocean I've even taken my foildrive out on rivers to practice pumping. After a month away from surf I went from never being able to connect waves via pumping, to getting consistent 2/3 for 1s the very next time I was back in the surf. My friends were blown away.

These days, my motto is if I can paddle into the waves I'm leaving the foildrive in my truck. But if I show up at the beach and the tides rising fast and everyone else is struggling, I'll quickly mount my foildrive motor, and get 20+ waves in under an hour. Everyone else is getting out of the water because it's no longer breaking enough for a normal surfer, but I'm frothing to go out for an amazing session where I'll be catching waves until I can't stand any longer.

Long story short - the foil drive is an absolute game changer. Coolest innovation I've seen in foiling yet. I can't wait to see what's next for the future of foiling.
